DigitalLabs and Professional Development
Hi there! We’re DigitalLabs@MMU –
If you’re a 2nd Year Student involved with any of the computing courses, then chances are you’ll be doing a Professional Development module. That’s where you’ll meet us. We’ll be hosting a few of your labs, and running some of your Live Projects.
We’re an Enterprise Unit run by the university, to illustrate a small digital business. We run projects, design and construct digital systems. That’s everything from physical computing (control of real world objects via small computing platforms, like Raspberry Pis) to blogs, single page web apps and data science for healthcare, there’s not much we haven’t done.
Live Projects run from October until March; student teams run a selection of projects, culminating in the Showcase Event. They are a fantastic opportunity to create a portfolio of your own work, which you can choose to show to potential employers, on GitHub. For a cracking example, take a look at team RatchetC’s repo here.
Have a look at our write-up of last year’s event. The winners (Stand up Air92!) were mentored by DigitalLabs – we interviewed them about their experiences. Take a look here.
DigitalLabs doesn’t stop with Live Projects – we interview for Summer Projects in May, after the exams. That’s the chance of paid employment over 12 weeks, on projects run to the same project methodology we teach. You can take a look at this year’s project here. Want to find out what it was like? We’ve got an interview and a diary for you to take a peek at.
That’s about it until we see you in a couple of weeks for labs. Hope your 2nd year is fab.
Best wishes,
DigitalLabs 🙂
